Bette Buna

When Dawit and Hester inherited the Bette Buna estate, they embraced the profound responsibility of uplifting the entire village of Taferi Kela. Located in Ethiopia’s famed Sidamo region, Bette Buna (literally “House of Coffee”) is actively transforming this historically overlooked community. By distributing over 350,000 climate-adapted coffee seedlings annually, they inject vital, sustainable income into the local economy. As a deeply inclusive enterprise, Bette Buna provides empowering work for single mothers and the disabled community. Every lot is meticulously mapped down to the individual picker, ensuring fair wages, unparalleled transparency, and full EUDR compliance.

To preserve the complex, sweet character of this exceptional harvest, the coffee undergoes a gentle Sugar Cane Ethyl Acetate (EA) decaffeination process. Partnering with Coffein Compagnie, the green beans are gently steamed to open their cellular structure. A natural EA solution — utilizing compounds found in sugar cane and fresh fruit — is then introduced to selectively extract the caffeine without stripping away the coffee’s vibrant origin characteristics. Following a final cleansing steam and careful drying phase, the result is a brilliantly clean, decaffeinated Ethiopian specialty coffee that refuses to compromise on its rich, authentic flavor.

On green coffee

We do not cut costs on green coffee, and we try to work with the same producers and importers season after season. If you want to know what we paid for a lot or how it scored on the cupping table, ask us: we are glad to share.
