- Gatomboya Washing Station
Named after its local village, the Gatomboya Coffee Washing Station is proudly owned and supplied by a dedicated cooperative of smallholder farmers. Cultivating an average of 400 coffee bushes alongside daily food crops on single-hectare plots, these farmers grow a high-quality blend of classic Kenyan varietals — including the heritage SL28, the balanced SL34, and the highly resilient Ruiru 11. To connect growers directly with the fruits of their labor and generate sustainable, year-round income, the cooperative innovatively roasts and sells its lower-grade harvests under the local “Barichu Coffee House” brand, actively fostering a vibrant specialty coffee culture within the farming community itself.
This community-driven ethos is matched by a rigorous, uncompromising approach to post-harvest processing. Farmers deliver only the ripest red cherries to the wet mill for stringent sorting and pulping. The coffee then undergoes a careful, temperature-mapped fermentation for 16 to 20 hours to gently break down the natural sugars. Afterward, the beans are thoroughly cleansed in traditional gradient water channels — a meticulous washing technique that unlocks the coffee’s bright, signature acidity. Finally, the clean parchment is spread across raised African beds to slowly dehydrate for up to 20 days, carefully shielded by shade nets during peak afternoon heat to protect the cellular structure of the beans and preserve their natural sweetness.
Your order is processed and shipped within 1–2 working days. Delivery takes 1–2 working days in Portugal and 3–5 in the EU.
Free shipping for orders over €40.
Keep the bag sealed, away from direct light, at room temperature. For best results use the coffee from day 7 to day 60 after roasting. Grind fresh before brewing.
We do not cut costs on green coffee, and we try to work with the same producers and importers season after season. If you want to know what we paid for a lot or how it scored on the cupping table, ask us: we are glad to share.
