Ethiopia Taferi Kela Filter

CRISP. MODERN. REFINED.
This is a stunning showcase of what Ethiopian coffee can be today. The 'washed anaerobic' process unlocks a remarkably crisp profile that we absolutely love. It drinks like a beautifully complex floral tea, packed with vibrant notes of fresh apricot and deep cherry jam, all wrapped up in a smooth honey finish.

Bette Buna is more than a coffee producer; it is the heartbeat of Taferi Kela in Ethiopia’s Sidamo region.

When Dawit and Hester were asked by their grandparents, Syoum and Emame, to take over the family farm, they inherited a much larger responsibility: to uplift their entire village. Despite sharing a mountain range with some of the most famous coffee-producing areas in the world, Taferi Kela had historically been overlooked by the industry, leaving the local economy struggling.

Today, Bette Buna is rewriting that narrative. In a country where coffee drives the economy but leaves many farmers without a livable income, Dawit and Hester are building a sustainable, equitable model. They are teaching regenerative agro-forestry, distributing hundreds of thousands of seedlings, and championing an unprecedented level of supply chain transparency.

The Bette Buna Impact:

  • Economic Empowerment: By teaching farmers to improve soil health and pick only the heaviest, ripest cherries, producers earn more by weight and receive vital quality premiums. Furthermore, the 350,000 climate-adapted seedlings distributed annually from their nursery inject massive economic value into a region where the average household income is severely limited.
  • Inclusive Employment: Bette Buna actively breaks cultural barriers by operating as an equal opportunity employer. Their in-house nursery provides meaningful, accommodating work for disenfranchised groups, including differently-abled individuals, the deaf community, and single mothers in need of childcare support.
  • Total Traceability: In a country where tracing coffee back to the individual farmer is notoriously difficult, Bette Buna maps every single person involved in the supply chain—from the cherry pickers to the mill workers. This ensures fair wages at every step, guarantees absolute transparency for the final cup, and perfectly preps their coffee for EUDR compliance.

On green coffee

We do not cut costs on green coffee, and we try to work with the same producers and importers season after season. If you want to know what we paid for a lot or how it scored on the cupping table, ask us: we are glad to share.
