Four generations of coffee run in Doña Rita’s blood. Her family’s journey began with a small plot of land inherited by her father, which grew through decades of sacrifice, effort, and hard work. For years, the family relied on selling their harvest to traditional commercial mills—a volume-based model that made it increasingly difficult to sustain their livelihood.
Everything changed in 2019 when Doña Rita partnered with the non-profit Bean Voyage. Through their training programs, she entered an empowering new chapter: learning to process her own coffee to access the specialty market and achieve more equitable prices. By taking control of her harvest, she is actively sustaining her family's four-generation legacy.
Doña Rita’s farm is also a vibrant ecological sanctuary. Driven by a deep commitment to conservation, she dedicates a percentage of her land entirely to forest protection. She has seamlessly integrated approximately 180 native tree species among her coffee plants, creating a thriving, shaded habitat for local wildlife, including goldfinches and toucans.
Grown in the rich, nutrient-dense volcanic soil near the Poás Volcano, her coffee benefits from high altitudes, ideal rainfall, and carefully selected new varieties. But as Doña Rita firmly believes, the ultimate secret to her high-quality coffee is the love her family pours into it.
The Process:
- Selective Harvesting: The family meticulously hand-picks cherries at peak ripeness, ensuring the highest quality from the very beginning.
- Independent Milling: Breaking away from traditional volume mills, Doña Rita now processes her own lots, granting her strict quality control over the fermentation and de-pulping phases.
- Careful Drying: The processed coffee is dried thoughtfully to stabilize the moisture content, honoring the family's hard work and locking in the vibrant flavors for the specialty market.
Your order is processed and shipped within 1–2 working days. Delivery takes 1–2 working days in Portugal and 3–5 in the EU.

Keep the bag sealed, away from direct light, at room temperature. For best results use the coffee from day 7 to day 60 after roasting. Grind fresh before brewing.
We do not cut costs on green coffee, and we try to work with the same producers and importers season after season. If you want to know what we paid for a lot or how it scored on the cupping table, ask us: we are glad to share.
